News from the Future: Democracy, Human Rights, Peace

2022 ACC Democracy, Human Rights, Peace Illustration & Picture Diary Contest

#ACC

Every May, echoes from those who once filled the Geumnam-ro Street can be heard. The song Marching for our Beloved reminds us of the fervor and sacrifice made by those who, above all, desired democracy.

The cries of those left behind echoed throughout the last 40 years as survivors, once young and lively, started showing white in their hair. Since then, many things have changed, but our passion for democracy continues.

The values left by the ghosts of that May now go beyond Asia to the world. This year, the Asia Culture Center (ACC) will host the 2022 ACC Democracy, Human Rights, Peace Illustration & Picture Diary Contest to commemorate the May 18 Democratic Movement and spread the values of democracy, human rights, and peace globally.

The contest’s theme is News from the Future: Democracy, Human Rights, Peace. Participants are invited to use their creativity and imagine the values of democracy, human rights, and peace in tomorrow’s world.

The theme of this contest centers around a sneak peek into the future society. How would the participants imagine the future? Would the values of democracy, human rights, and peace be what we dream about today? The contest raises many interesting questions.

The contest, which has, so far, been held through webtoons, posters, and videos (UCC), has expanded its scope to include illustrations that touch one’s soul and picture diaries that capture children’s innocence.

Preschoolers and elementary schoolers can use their imagination for the picture diary, while all applicants above middle school age can apply for the illustration contest and freely express their messages of hope for the future.

All citizens of the Republic of Korea are eligible for participation. Works submitted must be the participant’s original creation. If the work submitted is identified to have been plagiarized, the award will be canceled. The intellectual rights to the works submitted to the contest (intellectual property and moral rights) belong to the creator—the applicant—and are, in principle, bound to the awardee even after awarding.

Submitted works are reviewed under the following criteria: subject pertinence (30 points), artistic value (30), public-friendliness (20), and promotional capability (20), with subject pertinence being given the most weight. Winning works will be used as educational and promotional materials published on Channel ACC, the ACC Media Wall, and the ACC’s social media pages.

Ideas for the creative process may be acquired through the following sources.

An ACC manager involved in this project said, “We hope that this contest, which commemorates the May 18 Democratic Movement, will see works revisiting the values of democracy, human rights, and peace, which are the ones that connect the future generation of Korea to Asia and the world.”

Those who want to join this contest can go to the ACC website https://www.acc.go.kr , download the form under “ACC Event,” and submit it along with the piece via email (oohio@korea.kr).

For more information, refer to the ACC website or the ACC Department of Exchange and Promotion (☎ +82-62-601-4266).

The contest is not the only event offered by the ACC this May. The May Story program, which visits the sites involved in the May 18 Democratic Movement with the stories of the May families and, thus, recalls the history and value of that day, takes visitors to the former Jeollanam-do Provincial Office building and its annex for about 30 sessions until June 18.

Another contest titled May, at that Day and Place, a historic site illustration contest that accepts works based on historical facts associated with 22 sites concerning the May 18 Democratic Movement, is a part of the May Story Puzzles educational content program that runs until June 30.
