Introduction
21st Century Pansori
PAN
“Are we sharing a round loaf (lepeshka) with someone right now?” “PAN” sheds light on how Koryo-saram community’s identity has been preserved and transformed through interactions and hospitality with Central Asian locals during their forced deportation. The performance connects the ongoing history of Koryo-saram deportation with the narrative of the pansori “Simcheongga,” portraying their challenging lives in present-day Korea. Through various artistic expressions blending sound, choreography, and musical performance, the show explores the true meaning of hospitality that connects and sustains lives, preserving communities. Directed by Kim Jaehoon, known for capturing unfamiliar worlds by crossing boundaries, the production features Sorikkun (pansori singer) Kwon Song-hee, who bridges tradition with the contemporary world, along with choreographer Jung Ji-hye and musician Siyul.
Director’s Statement
“PAN” is a project and performance that presents stories of various social subjects through diverse performing arts languages, reflecting contemporary social phenomena and society. In this edition of “PAN,” we focus on the forced deportation of Koryo-saram and Gwangju’s Wolgok-dong, where they gathered after returning to Korea. To portray the pain of Koryo-saram forcibly uprooted from their homes and deported to Central Asia in 1937, I believed we needed to grasp even a fraction of their heartbreaking experience. Therefore, my eight colleagues and I traveled across Kazakhstan’s vast plains to the Korean Theatre of Kazakhstan in Almaty, and journeyed from the Kim Byeong-hwa Collective Farm in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, to Samarkand, seeking to understand the current lives and thoughts of Koryo-saram. “PAN” invites the audience to encounter Koryo-saram, whether near or far, through pansori, piri, dance, visuals, and recorded interviews, reflecting their ongoing lives. This story is imbued with the spirit of “hospitality” that seeks to connect us all.
