Barefooted Youth, 1964
A poignant love story between a young man and a woman from different social backgrounds
Gangster Seo Doo-soo (played by Kang Shin-sung-yill) is transporting smuggled watches when he sees Joanna (played by Um Aing-ran) and her friend being threatened by delinquents. After a moment’s hesitation, he rescues her from the dangerous situation, sparking a romance between them. However, Doo-soo is tormented by the disparity between his life of crime and Joanna’s privileged upbringing as the daughter of a diplomat. They strive to understand each other’s vastly different cultures.

One day, Doo-soo gets involved in a scam and cannot meet Joanna at their promised rendezvous. He ends up in prison, and years later, they meet again by chance. Despite their reunion, the social barriers remain high. Doo-soo faces another prison sentence because of a smuggling incident. In the final act, they spend one last night together in a remote village, choosing to be together forever through a double suicide.
