An experiential performance combining video, laser, lighting, and immersive sounds
2024 ACC Fantastic Theater
The Gobi
In our digital society, algorithms confine us within bubbles of biased information, with supermassive systems analyzing us to a degree surpassing self-awareness. Amid the endless flow of information generated by algorithms, our hearts and minds are no longer free, denying us the opportunity for introspection. The 2024 ACC Fantastic Theater production, “The Gobi,” offers a radical escape from this digital realm into a primal, drastic natural environment where we can wholly face ourselves in ACC’s Theater 1. The term “Gobi” refers to the harsh Gobi Desert; in Mongolian, “Gobi” (Говь) translates to “wasteland.” Though it is nothing but a wordplay in Korean, “gobi” also signifies a moment of profound resistance. In “The Gobi,” participants examine themselves like pilgrims in a desert, in an environment devoid of external stimuli, much like the space of isolation that the theater offers from one’s routine. Within this isolation, we discover solace and freedom; under the vast night sky, we find the solitude and epiphany inherent to humanity. Freed from the constraints of algorithms, our senses are finally attuned to the depths of our own hearts.

Programs Running Time Description
Preset 10 min. The oasis in the theater is the perspective defined and adopted by the participants. Despite differing perspectives, we are united in the goal of seeking our desires.
The Sea of Algorithms 6 min. The oasis freezes over and shatters, forming waves. All the information around the world gathers into one and scatters before our eyes. Social media messages, mythical creatures, the primal landscapes, and the innumerable and unimaginable variety of preferences held by people—they all coalesce into the Sea of Algorithms.
Vibration and Quicksand 6 min. The Sea of Algorithms collapses like a sinkhole, taking the information with it. Darkness fills the void. Perhaps this is what will happen when all the digital devices in the world disappear. The vibration and the light wake “me” up from this chaos.
Pilgrimage into the Starlit Desert 5 min. We wake up in the middle of a starlit desert and discover the trajectories of the stars above us.
The Sun Awakens 6 min. The sun rises above the horizon, illuminating the land and the vast expanse of the desert. Our eyes open, finally free from the sea of information that had held our gaze captive.
Part 2 Discussion with the Director (20 min.)
This program allows participants to discuss the direction and creation process with the director. They can also experience the laser, video, and sound technologies used on stage.
