Let’s die and be frank.
Conversations on before and after death, the afterlife, and past lives.
<Frankly> is a collaboration between Goblin Party from Korea,
whose shows unfold simple, yet brilliant ideas, and Kedagoro of Japan,
who express unconventional ideas through untamed movements.
“Ask about pretense and ask about frankness”
Pretense in this world is frankness in the next world
Pretense in the next world is frankness in this world
Am I in this world? Or the next world? Maybe *UKIYO
*UKIYO
‘Ukiyo’ is a Japanese art term, also known as ukiyo-e, a genre of Japanese painting that was catching on even in Europe during the Edo period. Before that, the term had generally meant the “worried worlds.” According to the pessimistic view of life before the Japanese Middle Ages, this world was considered worried and concerned, which should be avoided and shunned, unlike the afterlife where people could attain Buddhahood in the Western Paradise. In modern times, it changed to a way of thinking in which we should live in this world at ease in a little bit of a restive mood if we could stay this world only for a while. The characters for ‘Ukiyo’ changed from (憂世) to (浮世), where the nuance is a little bit more positive. Now the word also means the current style and the style of the current world, which sees the current lifestyles and customs from a positive perspective.

About the team
Goblin Party (Korea)
This party is formed by Korean goblins who lure people with exceptional talents and possess bad-tempered behavior and aspects. Goblin Party, consisting only of choreographers with no leader, creates stories together under the motto “Roll the square that does not roll!” Focusing on communicating with the audience, they have been putting forth effort to create works that can expand the horizons of the audience. Their major works include <Once Upon A Time> that won the Jury Prize at the 2017 MASDANZA (Spain), <Playground> that won the Best Work Prize at 2021 Changmu Dance Art Awards, and <The Silver Knife> that won the Jury’s Prize at 2020 Seoul Dance Film Festival. One of their works was also selected as one of the Best 6 Works of the Year by the Korean Association of Dance Critics and Researchers in 2023.
KEDAGORO (Japan)
KEDAGORO was formed in 2013 and consists of 7 members. Their masterpiece <Sky> (2018) links the process of their own creation with the structure of collective madness under the theme of the Asama-Sansō incident by the United Red Army. Another major work, <Because Kazcause> (2021), was inspired by the theme of Kazuko Fukuda, a hostess murderer who had changed her face through plastic surgery in the 1980s. Their recent works include <Sewol> (2022), made under the theme of the sinking of the MV Sewol in Korea. Based on their philosophy “Dance is a way to interpret the world,” they have been performing controversial works both at home and abroad. In addition, they have recently been working on reinterpreting and reconstructing their own works from a critical point of view. Since 2019, they have been invited by numerous dance festivals at home and abroad, including SIDance 2019 (Korea) and Hong Kong Dance Exchange 2020 (Hong Kong). In 2021, they won the Kyoto Award, equivalent to the Grand Prize, and the Audience Award at Kyoto Choreography Awards 2020. Shimojima’s individual works include his solo work titled <Monkey in a Diaper> (2017) made under the theme of the Aum Shinrikyo incident, and <Shut Up Womb>, entrusted by the Korea National Contemporary Dance Company. In 2022, she was selected as Saison Foundation Fellow I and ACY U39 Artist Fellow.
