Age limit
  • Age limit: Ages 7 and older (born before 2016 or elementary students)
  • Please bring proof that indicates your date of birth (NHIS certificate, resident registration certificate, passport, student ID card, etc.)

Ticket booking and pick-up
  • Pick-up of tickets and on-site purchase of tickets are available for one hour before the show begins.

  • The Asia Culture Center has put an age limit on the show and restricts photography and entry after the show has begun for a pleasant viewing experience.

  • The audience may enter the performance hall 30 minutes before the show begins. Entry after the beginning of the show may be restricted.
  • * Entry time may vary according to situations or the characteristics of the show. The audience is recommended to enter 10 minutes before the beginning of the show.
  • * Some seats on the first floor (Row M and N) and the seats on the second floor may have obscured views due to the safety railing. Please note this when reserving tickets.

An intense tragedy that happened in just one day in June 1800!
Puccini’s <Tosca> is performed as a concertante.

A concertante performed as a concert with an orchestralets you feel the essence of opera.
Concentrate on the songs and performances of top opera singers.
The performance, a collaboration of Maestro Choi Seung-han and Opera Director Kim Ji-yeong,will present a tragic love story.

Including <E lucevan le stelle>, an aria of love, misunderstanding, and betrayal that drove three youths to death in a single night,some of the greatest arias in the opera history will be presented.
Synopsis
An intense tragedy that happened in a single night!
Chief of Police Scarpia loves Tosca even though he knows that she is in love with a man named Cavaradossi. Cavaradossi is arrested by Scarpia because of a political incident in which his friend engaged in. Scarpia make a false promise to Tosca that he will save Cavaradossi when executing him by firing blanks... A tragic love story based on complicated conflicts moves the hearts of the audience.

Chorus Gwangju Municipal Choir
An “authentic harmony” for Gwangju citizens
The Gwangju Municipal Choir (GMC) was launched as a citizens’ choir by Professor Jang Shin-deok in 1976. It has become a major choir representing Korea, marking its 47th anniversary this year. Working with many pioneering conductors in the Korean choir history, such as Seok Bok-ryong, Kim Yeon-sul, Kim Dong-hyun, Yoo Byeong-mu, Gu Cheon, Lim Han-gwi, and Kim Yeon-jae, the GMC has held higher quality concerts in a lot of performances, including more than 190 regular concerts. Such efforts have been highly recognized by Gwangju citizens, classical music fans, and the Korean choir lovers. It has also taken the lead in cultural exchanges with other cities and provinces, such as Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, Busan, Daegu, Jeju, and Jeonju. Moreover, it has also performed overseas concerts in USA, Japan, and China, and contributed to international public relations and cultural exchanges of Gwangju. Striving to become a top-notch choir through high-quality repertoires, natural and well-blended vocalization and exuberant chorus, it has received a lot of attention and favors from the press and classical music fans, presenting fine performances at each concert. The GMC tries to make classical concerts accessible to local residents by frequently visiting them for active communication through chorus, and implements a variety of cultural projects to contribute to students’ character education.
Children’s Choir Gwangju CBS Children’s Choir
The Gwangju CBS Children’s Choir, founded in 1985, is serving as a praise missionary spreading God’s gospel and love through more than 800 performances, including 31 regular concerts and overseas invitation concerts in 15 countries. The choir has greatly contributed to the Christian youth culture revival through children’s original opera <David> and chorus musical <Eternal Promise>, and has been engaged in active performances with various genres of music. The choir has won the group championship with the Grand Prize and Conductor’s Award in the Yantai-Penglai Asia-Pacific International Chorus & Solo Arts Festival, and also won the Gold Prize in the Daekyo Chorus Korea Competition. The choir is making efforts to spread joyful and hopeful messages to weary and tired people through gracious and moving choruses and to become a wonderful choir through systematic chorus and character education.
Orchestra Klang Symphony Orchestra (K.S.O.)
The Klang Symphony Orchestra (K.S.O.), composed of young musicians in Gwangju, is a professional performance group that has actively participated in the local culture and arts since 2018. As the meaning of the name Klang, the K.S.O. provides friendly and comforting music to the audience through clean tones and classical interpretation of music, and has been steadily growing with favorable reviews at each concert.
The K.S.O. has performed more than four operas every year since its performance with the Gwangju Metropolitan Orchestra in 2018 and has been recognized for its artistic competence. The K.S.O. is also offering opportunities for people to enjoy classical music by planning visiting concerts, school and house concerts, and talk concerts with ensembles composed of various instruments, not only wind and string instruments but also percussion.

Art Director/Director Kim Ji-yeong
Director Kim Ji-yeong studied opera directing in the Opera Department at the Soongsil University Conservatory of Music and the Korea National University of Arts, and completed Biennio Diploma at the Accademia G.Donizetti. She directed <La Boheme> at the Auditorium di cerunosco sul naviglio and <Madame Butterfly> at the Milano (Masate) Anfiteatro in Italy; in Korea, starting with <Ari Arirang>, a piece selected by the National Opera Creative Factory, she directed premieres of original operas <Moon, Shine>, <The Snake Ate My Heart>, and <Brundibár>. With her unique artistic world through works in various genres, she has become an important director representing the Korean opera direction. She worked as a professor at the Academy of the Korea National Opera, Korea National University of Arts, Seokyeong University, Kyungmin University, Seoul Arts College, and Sangmyung University. She is currently a visiting professor at the University of Suwon, and educating students at the Korea National Open University. Moreover, she is the president of Incheon Arte and a director of the Incheon Namdong Cultural Foundation.
Conductor Choi Seung-han
Conductor Choi Seung-han graduated from the Composition Department of Yonsei University College of Music and Yonsei University Graduate School of Education; he also completed the Berliner Kirchenmusikschule im Johannesstift, and graduated from the Conducting Department of the Berlin University of Arts. He worked as an assistant conductor of the Incheon Philharmonic Orchestra, and conducted famous symphony orchestras in the country, such as the KBS Symphony Orchestra, Seoul Symphony Orchestra, and Korean Symphony Orchestra. In addition, he was invited as a conductor to the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra, Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo New City Symphony Orchestra, and Italy Puccini Festival (Torre del lago). He is also actively working as a conductor in a range of fields, including conducting opera works such as <La Traviata>, <Otello>, <Don Carlo>, <La Boheme>, and <Madame Butterfly>, and ballet works such as <Swan Lake>, <Giselle>, and <The Nutcracker>. He is serving as an emeritus professor in the Department of Orchestral Music at Yonsei University College of Music and a special professor at Northeast Normal University of China.

The Gwangju Metropolitan Opera was founded in 2017 to enhance the status of Gwangju as a cultural hub of Asia and to gratify citizens’ desire for culture and arts. Enabling citizens to become subjects of arts and making a cultural and artistic path for musical talents, artists, and performance experts, it is expanding the base of Korean opera, advancing to a wide range of opera genres. The Gwangju Metropolitan Opera will continue to create Gwangju's unique operas together with citizens to introduce the excellence of its culture and arts to the world.
