Introduction
Gwangju’s cultural and artistic environment is actively working to establish an infrastructure that connects with the global community. Through collaboration with the ACC and local artists, the city is building a foundation for mutual solidarity, creation, exchange, and cooperation. In the field of art, Gwangju is pursuing diverse efforts to secure its identity as an internationally oriented city of art while laying the groundwork for further development. Additionally, by emphasizing the dynamics of contemporary art, the city aims to foster growth and gather insights to solidify its role as an art-focused city, ultimately positioning itself as a global hub for contemporary art.
The 2024 Companionship Exhibition “Canvas and Harmony” is an art exhibition featuring Gwangju Branch of Korean Fine Arts Association members. This event aims to break down the barriers of complex contemporary art, making it more accessible to the public while creating a space for open interaction and engagement. Furthermore, it aspires to showcase Gwangju’s identity as an art capital, with local artists transcending the boundaries of Asia to explore and expand the currents of contemporary art, embodying a sense of harmony in the process.
Globalism serves as a rich source of inspiration for contemporary art, fostering interconnected relationships. These relationships strive for harmonious balance shaped by the simultaneity of the contemporary era. In this context, insight is essential for capturing and expressing diverse perspectives and consciousness. Within this grand narrative of the times, artists are expected to cultivate a unique way of perceiving the world. Their role involves reinterpreting the myriad elements of society to elevate both the purpose of art and its contribution to the public good.
Modern individuals often encounter uncomfortable truths within systems of interaction and communication. Through the relativity of positivity and negativity or the phenomena of daily life, artists synthesize unique perspectives and profound thoughts to create a rich spectrum of expression. In doing so, their deep insights into everyday contexts and issues inspire various creative works, each imbued with the distinct essence of their individual narratives.
This exhibition brings together artists who are members of the Fine Arts Association and are actively working in the Gwangju region. It serves as a unique platform to showcase the artistic essence cultivated by these artists, who uphold the association’s commitment to the public interest and the values inherent in the purpose of art while aligning with its vision and direction. Furthermore, the exhibition holds special significance as it presents the outcomes of each artist’s persistent efforts to explore and expand the inner necessity of their art, offering a glimpse into their profound and unique creative journeys.
This exhibition offers an opportunity to experience diverse works of art, each reflecting the personal, expressive language of individual artists. As an event that emphasizes mutual trust and relational interaction, it aspires to foster a sense of harmony and unity within the local community. Furthermore, the exhibition seeks to honor the cultural rights of the community, evolving into an element that enhances cultural and artistic synergy while serving as a bridge to cultural enjoyment for the public.
Lastly, with the participation of over 20 artists, this exhibition aims to provide artistic services and establish a cultural infrastructure. It is hoped that this exhibition will serve as a platform to enhance the creative capacities of local artists and contribute to the advancement of regional art.
