Introduction
Seen through the Pure and Innocent Eyes of Children
A Children’s Opera “The Elixir of Love”
“Sometimes, sincerity and honesty—no matter how naive—can be the greatest remedy of all …”
Gaetano Donizetti, one of Italy’s most celebrated opera composers who has created 70 operas, wrote “The Elixir of Love” in just two weeks. Known for its heartfelt yet lighthearted melodies, this opera allows audiences to feel the depth of love amid comedic events.

In this children’s adaptation, the recitatives—traditionally sung dialogue—have been reimagined with Korean dialogue to make the story easier to follow. Meanwhile, the arias and ensembles remain in their original Italian, preserving the opera’s beauty and elegance for a delightful experience.
Plot
What effect will the elixir of love have?
In the rural Basque region of Spain, an innocent young man named Nemorino is deeply in love with the beautiful farm owner, Adina.

Adina, who always dreams of exciting and diverse kinds of love, and Nemorino, who watches her from afar, longing for unchanging, eternal love.

One day,
Nemorino gathers his courage and confesses his love to Adina.
But just then, Sergeant Belcore appears before Adina, proposing marriage on the spot.
Desperate, Nemorino spends his entire fortune to buy an elixir of love from the traveling quack doctor Dulcamara, hoping it will win her heart.
Songs
  • How beautiful she is!: “Quanto è bella, quanto è cara”
An aria in which Nemorino, secretly in love with the smartest and prettiest Adina in the village, expresses his feelings for her.
    Nemorino
  • Just like Paris did in the past: “Come paride vezzoso”
Belcore’s aria in which he proposes to the beautiful Adina.

  • Listen, listen, oh peasants: “Udite, Udite, O Rustici”
A song full of bravado, where Dulcamara cleverly persuades the villagers that his elixir is a miraculous cure-all for every ailment imaginable.

  • Obliged. Oh, yes, obliged: “Obbligato, ah si obbligato”
A duet where Nemorino spends his entire fortune on the fake love potion, while Dulcamara feels satisfied and smug about selling cheap wine at an exorbitant price.
    Nemorino and Dulcamara
  • Dear elixir! She is mine now!: “Caro elisir! Sei mio!”
Left alone, Nemorino drinks the fake love potion, marvels at its effects, and hums joyfully to himself in a drunken stupor.

  • Adina, believe me!: “Adina Credimi!”
Adina accepts Belcore’s marriage proposal immediately. Witnessing this, Nemorino falls into despair and begs her to wait just one more day.
    Nemorino, Belcore, and Adina
  • Two hundred thousand won!: “Venti Scudi!”
Upon hearing the news of Adina’s wedding, a desperate Nemorino rushes to Dulcamara. To buy a stronger dose of the elixir of love, he signs a military enlistment contract with Belcore in exchange for money.
    Nemorino and Belcore
  • A furtive tear: “Una furtiva lagrima”
An aria sung by Nemorino after winning Adina’s heart, realizing that she loves him too. It is one of the most famous pieces in opera.
    Nemorino
  • Take it; you are now free: “Prendi, per me sei libero”
An aria where Adina returns the military enlistment contract she retrieved from Belcore.
    Adina
  • The ultimate problem-solver: “Ei corregge ogni difetto”
Thanks to the elixir of love, two couples get married, and everyone finds happiness. Dulcamara, now even more confident, becomes a celebrated hero as he presents his new “miracle wine” and receives the crowd’s admiration in this aria.
