Introduction
“Yeonhee Goblin”
“What does a Korean goblin look like?”
This performance aims to correct the misrepresentation of Korean “goblins,” often confused with Japan’s “oni,” and showcase the playful and lively spirit unique to Korea’s goblins. Through adaptations of familiar folktales, such as “Heungbu and Nolbu” and “The Goblin and the Hazelnut Tree,” the show conveys the timeless message of “good triumphs over evil” by blending traditional performing arts with puppets and masks.
Traditional Namsadang Nori, such as Beona (plate-spinning), Deotboegi (mask dance), and Deolmi (puppet play), are brought to life with the melodies of traditional Korean instruments like the taepyeongso and piri. In addition, modern projection mapping technology further enhances the spectacle, expanding the stage’s possibilities. Guided by the storyteller “Park Cheomji,” step into the enchanting world of a storybook!
※ Deolmi: Also known as Kkokdugaksinoreum among Namsadang Nori, it is Korea’s only traditional puppet theater, designated as Important Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 3.
Plot
“Eummakkaengkkaeng! Will chanting a spell with a broom make your wishes come true?!”
The greedy older brother, “Nolsae,” and his kindhearted younger sibling, “Heungdeok”
One day, Heungdeok goes to the mountain to gather wood on an errand for his older brother.
Just as he is about to cut down a hazelnut tree, a squirrel pleads with him not to. Instead of chopping it down, he picks up the fallen hazelnuts and places them in his pocket.
Crash… Boom!
Surprised by the sudden downpour, Heungdeok hid in an old thatched cottage.
Out of nowhere, frightening sounds echo, and goblins appear!

Eummakkaengkkaeng! Eummakkaengkkaeng!
Will Nolsae make it home safely?

“Yeonhui Workshop Eummakkaengkkaeng” preserves the spirit of Ongojishin (honoring the old while embracing the new) by blending modern satire and humor into traditional puppet theater.
The theater group’s name, “Eummakkaengkkaeng,” combines Eumma (音摩)—meaning sound massage, symbolizing the act of crafting music through gentle touch—and Kkaengkkaeng, an onomatopoeia for the clanging sounds of a forge. This reflects their dedication to creating performance objects such as puppets, puppet stages, and musical instruments. Through research and development of puppet-making techniques, “Eummakkaengkkaeng” overcomes the limitations of traditional puppets, incorporating diverse expressions and movements to showcase their unique style of object theater, which merges gugak (traditional Korean music) and puppetry.
