Introduction
I can speak, but please keep that a secret!
I live in a faraway country called Azerbaijan. Have you ever heard of it?
It’s a beautiful country with delicious pomegranates. Do you know where it is?
If you’re measuring from Korea, it’s farther than Japan and closer than the United States.
Next to Azerbaijan is a country called Armenia. There was a war between the two countries in the past. More than a million people had to leave their homes because bombs were dropped in the villages and people shot each other. That was when we last saw Shreya. Her mother led her away, so we couldn’t even say goodbye.
Who’s Shreya? Oh, she’s my friend, a cute girl with twin braids.
We used to play with another friend, Aghja, the white pigeon, every day. We were a dynamic trio and had so much fun together. But when Shreya left, Aghja and I became sad.
That’s why Aghja and I decided to go out and search for Shreya. Honestly? We’re a bit afraid because we keep hearing the sound of guns, but we really want to find Shreya because she’s a precious friend of ours.
Will you join us as we search for Shreya?
The children in this story share and grow through their courage and friendship amid the hardships of war.
This theater performance is based on the picture book “Finding Shreya”*. The author of this book, Sevinj Nurugizi, comes from Azerbaijan and has based this work on her own experience. Azerbaijan and Armenia have a long history of conflict around the mountainous region of Nagorno-Karabakh, which has continued to affect the people in the area to this day.
Shreya is a girl living together with her mother. Her father is a soldier, and ever since the beginning of the war, he could not be reached. Her only friends are Jubbulu, the freckled doll, and Aghja, the pigeon.
One day, gunshots ring out in the village, and Shreya’s mother hurriedly leads her away to safety. As a result, Shreya is separated from her two friends. Now left behind in the rubble of the village, Jubbulu and Aghja decide to embark on a journey in search of Shreya.
Along their journey, Jubbulu and Aghja run into an old cat named Svet. Despite its intimidating appearance, Svet is a warmhearted cat who protects the ruined village and house. With Svet’s help, the two continue their journey.
“Finding Shreya” does not tell the story of war from the perspective of the grown-ups. It also does not analyze the war from the perspective of politics, international relations, or religion. Instead, “Finding Shreya” casts a careful gaze toward the subject from the perspective of a child, a doll, and an animal.
Even the horrors of war cannot stop hope from returning. One day, our friends may disappear, but a new friend may also come to us like a gift. Can Jubbulu and Aghja find Shreya?
